Chai
The Hindi word for “tea,” is a beloved beverage in India and has gained worldwide popularity. Traditionally, it refers to a spiced tea made by brewing black tea leaves with a blend of aromatic spices, milk, and sweetener. The specific spices used can vary, but common ingredients include cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and black peppercorns.

Preparation of Chai:
To prepare chai, water and milk are combined and brought to a boil. The chosen spices and black tea leaves are added, and the mixture is simmered to extract the flavours. After brewing, the tea is strained and sweetened with honey or jaggery, according to personal preference.

Cultural Significance of Chai:
In India, chai is more than just a drink; it’s a cultural staple enjoyed throughout the day. Street vendors, known as “chaiwalas,” serve this beverage in small cups, fostering social interactions and community bonds.

Health Benefits of Chai:
The spices in chai offer various health benefits. For instance, ginger and cinnamon are known for their anti-inflammatory properties, while cardamom can aid digestion. Additionally, chai contains antioxidants from the black tea base, which can support overall health.
Ghee
Ghee, a form of clarified butter, is a staple in Indian cuisine and traditional Ayurvedic medicine that is produced by slowly heating butter to separate the milk solids and water, resulting in a pure fat that’s rich in flavour and nutrients.

Health Benefits of Ghee:
- Rich in Nutrients: Ghee is abundant in fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin A, essential for maintaining eye health, skin health, and immune function.
- Supports Heart Health: It contains omega-3 fatty acids, which may help decrease inflammation and protect against heart disease.
- Enhances Digestion: Ghee is rich in butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid that may aid digestion and boost the immune system, as well as help soothe the walls of the intestine.
- High Smoke Point: With a higher smoke point than butter, ghee is suitable for high-heat cooking methods like frying and sautéing without breaking down into harmful compounds.
- Lactose-Free: The clarification process removes most of the milk solids, making ghee virtually free of lactose and suitable for those with lactose intolerance.

Considerations:
While ghee offers several health benefits, it’s also high in saturated fat. Consuming it in moderation is advisable, especially for individuals managing cholesterol levels or heart disease. Incorporating ghee into a balanced diet can provide its advantages without excessive saturated fat intake.

Spices:
Spice mixes need to be changed to suit the weather conditions. In Summer the spice mix contains cooling spices and in the Winter it’s the opposite.
Tongue Scraper
Tongue scraping is a traditional Ayurvedic practice that’s become popular in modern wellness routines.

Tongue Scraping Benefits
Supports Digestion: In Ayurvedic medicine, tongue scraping is believed to stimulate the digestive system by activating the acupressure points on the tongue that connect to various organs in the body.
Boosts Immunity: By removing toxins from the tongue, scraping may help reduce the risk of infections that could arise from bacterial buildup.
For effective tongue scraping, it’s best to use a stainless-steel or copper tongue scraper, and to gently scrape from the back of the tongue to the front. Ideally, it should be done in the morning before eating or drinking.
